CHAPTER 36
Heather swallowed the last bite of her brownie, chased it down with the last sip of her cola, and then glanced around the circular picnic table at each one of her new friendsâeach one of her potential new friends, she amended, altering her thinking because sheâd only known them for a couple of hours so farâwhile she wiped her mouth with a napkin, quietly belching into it. Sheâd eaten too much, as had everyone else if she were to guess, including the two agents from Mirriazuâs security detail who were fortunate enough to currently be on duty. They had eaten in shifts, so as to maintain security. At least, that was how theyâd explained their decision to eat on their feet one at a time to her. To maintain security against what exactly, she had no idea. Anyway, the nine of them combined had put away a lot of food, but there were still leftovers on the small folding table that theyâd set up to hold all of the food.
The party was going well so far, as well as she had hoped that it would, and she was feeling pretty pleased about that. First impressions were important, after all. Perhaps with that fact in mind, Rebeccaâs friends had all shown up together, exactly on time, dressed in varying styles and colors of shorts and tee-shirts and sandals or sneakers, excited about having finished another school year and looking forward to having a good time celebrating. They genuinely seemed to be enjoying themselves, too, and why shouldnât they be? With Rebeccaâs enthusiastic helpâthat girl had some pretty unique ideas when it came to inventing new ways to season hamburgers and hot dogsâlunch had been a huge hit with everyone. Barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs in fresh buns with all the trimmings, three flavors of chips, four kinds of dips, four varieties of pickles, and six different flavors of soft drinks, followed by the fudge brownies that sheâd just baked this morning and ice cream for dessert. The girls had all seemed to like everything that sheâd servedâeverything that she and Rebecca had servedâand, so far, they seemed to like her, as well. She liked all of them, too.
AdvikaâHeather had tried, but couldnât even begin to pronounce her family nameâwas the only daughter of an immigrant family from Indiaâher father was a high-level aerospace engineer who worked out at Solfleetâs Schriever baseâbut had never been to India herself. Her skin was the color of light caramel and looked as smooth as silk. She had long, thick black hair that shone in the sun and perhaps the most amazing jade-green eyes that Heather had ever seen. She didnât talk a lot, but when she did her voice was calm and soothing. She was also unusually polite, always offering something to the others before she took any for herself.
Like Rebecca, Zoe Randolph had been born and raised in Colorado Springs. She was the youngest of the city mayorâs three daughters, the middle child
